As 2026 sees the release of numerous sequels, live-action adaptations, and new seasons of ongoing series, the “Game of Thrones” franchise’s spin-off announcement has fans eagerly speculating about its central characters and storyline.
The speculation is that Arya Stark is the main focus of the spin-off, and we might be seeing her side of the story.
The project of the spin-off was mentioned by the Hollywood Reporter in a profile on Game of Thrones author George RR Martin.
A brief overview of Arya Stark’s journey throughout all seasons of Game of Thrones
From the very first season of Game of Thrones, Arya Stark’s story is one of fierce independence. As Ned Stark’s youngest daughter, she explicitly rejects the traditional life of a noble lady, choosing instead to learn “water dancing” from the Braavosi master, Syrio Forel.
Arya Stark’s smallsword, “Needle,” a gift from her half-brother, remains a symbol of her true identity. Her life drastically changed after her father’s execution in King’s Landing, forcing her into a fight for survival and leading to the creation of her “Kill List.”
In season two, disguised as “Arry,” she was captured, serving as a secret cupbearer to Tywin Lannister at Harrenhal. She later endured trials, including forced blindness, to become “No One” while retaining Needle as a link to her past. Ultimately, she rejected the cult, returning to Westeros as “Arya Stark of Winterfell.”
In Season 3, she was taken by the Hound. Arya Stark shifts from survivor to vengeful assassin after witnessing her family’s Red Wedding slaughter, committing her first cold-blooded murder.
In Season 4, Arya travels with The Hound, using Needle to eliminate enemies. After Lysa’s death, she sees the Hound and Brienne duel. Choosing independence, she leaves the wounded Hound and sails to Braavos using Jaqen’s coin.
During Seasons 5 and 6, Arya trained brutally at the House of Black and White, enduring blindness and a rivalry with the Waif, to become “No One,” an elite assassin. Eventually, she reclaimed her identity as Arya Stark, regained her sight, and returned to Westeros to execute Walder Frey, avenging the Red Wedding.
She continued eliminating enemies in Seasons 7 and 8, critically defeating the Night King. Arya emerged as a fierce, independent warrior who forged her own path.
What could be expected in the Spin-off?
Critics have it that if the spin-off focuses on Arya Stark, it might replace the original version of the Sea Snake spin-off by being a more adventure-focused, high-seas show featuring exciting locations that were never explored before. This offers a potential, interesting expansion of the Game of Thrones world, presenting something that is both recognisable and familiar, yet new.
Stark is undoubtedly a beloved character among Game of Thrones fans. While the cast for the sequel remains unconfirmed, the focus on Arya Stark has fans eager to discover the story’s direction, especially given everything she experienced throughout the original series.
