“Witness K” has been arrested in connection with the alleged R14.9 million precious stones robbery case involving suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Brigadier Julius Mkhwanazi.
She was arrested on Friday by the police in Albeton, Gauteng.
Witness K, an inspector in the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s VIP Protection Unit, previously testified before the Madlanga Commission that Mkhwanazi allegedly orchestrated the 2023 Killarney robbery.
She alleged that she, Mkhwanazi and a three-member team carried out the operation, which involved the theft of high-grade sugilite and manganese stones, and claimed they were paid R110,000 from the proceeds.
Mkhwanazi has denied the allegations and has not been arrested in connection with the matter.
The arrest comes after EMPD officer Adrian MacKenzie and former EMPD officer Kersha-Leigh Stols were granted R5,000 bail each in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and fraud.
The case is expected back in court on August 25.
