As investigations unfold into the shocking case of Ndodana Tshuma, a 45-year-old Zimbabwean man accused of murdering his wife and two children in England, South Africa’s fragile border security has come under fire.
The arrest of Tshuma, confirmed by SAPS on Saturday, has sparked concerns from crime and security activists that porous borders are turning the country into a magnet for international criminals.
Tshuma fled the UK after allegedly committing the gruesome crime over a week ago.
SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe stated that investigators are now working with the international law enforcement agency Interpol to track Tshuma’s path into South Africa, how he evaded capture, and whether he received assistance while on the run. The probe highlights a broader issue regarding the effectiveness of the country’s border security in the face of rising threats.
According to reports, Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Lee Martin said Zimbabwean authorities worked closely with South African law enforcement, the UK’s National Crime Agency, Interpol, and the Crown Prosecution Service to track the suspect and close the international search.
Tshuma is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
A recent Interpol report revealed that South African organised crime groups are typically involved in wildlife and forestry crimes, including stock theft, as well as trafficking in drugs, firearms, people and counterfeit goods. Cybercrime is also emerging as a growing national concern.
The report found that most crime networks operate across several of these areas at once, using the same trafficking routes to move different forms of illicit goods across the region. This, it said, often brings violence, insecurity and economic loss.
Days before Tshuma’s arrest, reports emerged about a Nigerian fugitive involved in alleged financial and cyber crimes, further highlighting the pressing need for South Africa to reassess its security measures.
The links between these cases are drawing sharp responses from activists such as Yusuf Abramjee, who emphasise that coordinated national efforts are critical in combating the sharp rise in crime. “Responsibility lies with multiple role players,” Abramjee highlighted, calling for a robust response involving border management and immigration departments, law enforcement, and efforts to curb corruption within the systems.
He stated: “Greater cooperation between SAPS, the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, the Border Management Authority, and international partners such as Interpol is essential.”
In light of these ongoing cases, the rise of organised crime poses a significant threat to national security, as criminal networks facilitate the movement of fugitives, illicit goods, and firearms.
Abramjee further warned that South Africa is facing a crisis as unchecked illegal immigration and cross-border criminal activities – ranging from human trafficking to drug smuggling – continue to proliferate due to weak border controls.
He added that Tshuma’s case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within South Africa’s borders and the urgent need for reform.
