After two decades of songwriting, Zu. is stepping into a new chapter, one that feels more personal than anything she has shared before.
Her latest project, “Ilitye”, is a reflection of that. A conversation with herself, and in many ways, a return to where it all started.
The 11-track album, released on February 27, carries a title that translates to “stone” in English. However, for Zu., it is more than that. It is a story.
She described her body of work through a vivid image. Adult Zu. meets her younger self in a forest and hands her a pebble, a gift to keep safe.
But like any child, she swallows it and forgets. Years later, after searching for something she feels is missing, she realises the truth.
“‘Ilitye’ is a love letter from the adult me to my inner child. It’s me accepting that my feelings and circumstances may be real, but they do not define me. Everything I need, I am,” she said.
That idea sits at the heart of “Ilitye”. It is about healing, self-acceptance and finding your way back to yourself.
Zu. has always leaned into storytelling, and this project continues that, but in a way that feels even more intentional.
“I describe my sound as memory and medicine. Magic. Messages,” she said.
There is a quiet confidence in how she speaks about her work now. After 20 years in the game, she knows exactly what she wants to say and how she wants it to land.
With “Ilitye”, she is not just sharing music; she is sharing lessons.
“Two things I want people to take from the album,” she said. “Leak before you burst. And being you is your superpower.”
The album blends live instrumentation with contemporary African sounds, something Zu. curated herself, working with a select group of producers, including Z.E.N on the title track.
It also marks a shift in how she is showing up as an artist and what’s next for her.
“I’m back in the theatre using more of my talent to tell important stories. I’m going on tour to deliver the messages in person. I am humaning out loud unapologetically,” she said.
That energy is already carried into her live shows. With her national tour underway, Zu. shared audiences can expect something more than just a performance.
“Expect honesty, warmth, to be seen and to be held in a way that reminds you of your greatness.”
The tour kicked off on March 6 at Kings Kraal, with more dates lined up across the country, including a stop at Bloemfontein Civic Theatre on April 25.
