A Staircase Between Two Lives

Have you ever loved someone so much that you worried living with them would ruin it? Have you ever lain next to a person you adore and thought, I need a room of my own or I am going to lose my mind? Most of us push that thought away.

We tell ourselves it means something is wrong. Karina Marais did not push it away. She built her entire life around it.

For twenty years, she and her partner have shared a house but never a living space. His bachelor pad upstairs. Her retreat downstairs. A staircase between them. No unannounced visits. No sinking into the kind of routine that slowly bleeds the passion out of a relationship.

Just two people who decided that independence was not the opposite of love but the thing that kept it alive.

Would You Do It?

Could you knock on your partner’s door and wait to be invited in? It sounds impossible until you hear how Marais describes it, and then it sounds like the sanest arrangement you have ever encountered.

Music and Memoir

Upstairs Downstairs is her memoir but calling it a book does not do it justice. It spills across three albums of original songs, lyric readings, videos and a conceptual restaurant inside a dome at Forum Homini Boutique Hotel in the Cradle of Humankind, where an eleven‑course menu brings her story to your plate. Marais has no musical background. She wrote every lyric, briefed composers on the mood she wanted and openly used AI tools to generate several tracks. No pretence. Just a woman reaching for every medium she could find to tell her story.

Turning Points in Song

The songs carry the turning points. A painting of a two‑faced woman in her hallway that became a quiet prophecy of the double life she would build after her 2003 divorce. A rap track about dating in heels at forty‑five, dismissing camping trips and hiking boots in search of a man whose ambition matched her own. Swan cups in cobalt blue and lime green on a single saucer, their morning coffee ritual turned into a love song performed as a Popera duet. And then the moment that stopped me. THEY GET MARRIED! On a beach at Paternoster with vows in Afrikaans.

Commitment Chosen Freely

Did you catch that? All those years of proving that love does not need a marriage certificate. And then she chose one anyway. Not because anything was broken. Think about that for a moment. What would you choose if nobody expected anything from you? If there were no rules, no pressure, no script to follow? Just the quiet reminder that love can look like whatever you dare to make it.

From NGO to Creativity

Before this memoir, Marais co‑founded Brain Boosters, an early childhood development NGO that has reached over thirty thousand children across South Africa. She walked into Soweto townships in the 1990s to train teachers. She created a financial literacy board game endorsed by the JSE. The dreaming in this book is not wishful thinking. It comes from a woman who has spent decades turning ideas into things that exist in the world.

A Permission to Love Differently

The prose favours warmth over edge and the Elon Musk dedication on the opening track is a strange fit. But there is something in this story that stays with you. A permission you did not know you needed. To love differently. To protect your solitude without guilt. To knock on the door of someone who lives one staircase away and feel your heart race like it is the first time.

Two cups. One saucer. Twenty years.
