Duhan van der Merwe insists he has nothing to prove when he runs out for the Barbarians against the Springboks in Gqeberha on Saturday, but the chance to test himself against the world champions remains a major source of motivation.
The 31-year-old, who left South Africa nearly a decade ago to pursue his rugby career abroad, will once again face the country of his birth in what promises to be an entertaining start to the Springboks’ international season.
While it is a special occasion, Van der Merwe has embraced the relaxed atmosphere that comes with representing the Barbarians. It is the second year in a row that the world champions start their season against the invitational side in preparation for the Nations Championship, kicking off in July against England.
“I’m loving it to be honest,” Van der Merwe said about being in the Baabaas squad.
“It’s a bit of a different setup to what you are used to, but that’s the beauty of sport. Being able to come out to South Africa, be in a Barbarian squad and getting to know players over a beer or two, it reminds you of back in the day when you started playing rugby, and there wasn’t any added pressure.
“So far, it’s been unbelievable and I’m very grateful to have the opportunity. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and at times I thought I wouldn’t get the opportunity with games often a week before internationals.”
Van der Merwe first faced South Africa during the British & Irish Lions series in 2021, played in empty stadiums, and says those experiences have left him with fond memories rather than any lingering emotions.
“I don’t feel like I have a point to prove or anything. It’s been nine or ten years, and I’m just grateful for the opportunities I’ve had. The motivation is more that they have been the world champions for a long time, and you want to test yourself against the best. You know, whenever you play South Africa, it’s going to be pretty tough.”
Adding another layer to Saturday’s clash is a reunion with Stormers fullback and World Cup winner Warrick Gelant. The pair attended Hoërskool Outeniqua in George and spent time together in the Bulls academy system.
“It’s brilliant. I didn’t know Warrick was involved until I got here and saw him. He was my fullback in school back in 2013. We’ve got a really good relationship, so to be about to play together again is special.”
