Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen believes winning the MTN8 would provide the perfect springboard for Amakhosi’s season as they prepare to face Golden Arrows in Sunday’s quarter-final.
Chiefs return to South Africa’s premier knockout competition after missing the previous two editions, with Fernando Da Cruz’s side eager to make an immediate statement at FNB Stadium.
The Glamour Boys secured their place in this season’s MTN8 after improving their league position last term and now have the opportunity to compete for the first trophy of the new campaign.
Speaking after the MTN8 launch in Randburg earlier this week, Petersen admitted simply returning to the competition has provided added motivation within the Chiefs squad.
“To be back in the MTN8, I think that’s motivation on its own because we know how it felt to not be part of it, and I think that alone set the tone for us,” Petersen said.
“It shows us that it’s there now. It is within reach for us. It’s four games, and I think the most important one is the weekend. That first hurdle, that first step, and that’s Golden Arrows.”
Chiefs know the shortest route to silverware begins this weekend, with only three victories separating them from ending another trophy drought in the competition.
However, Petersen believes the significance of the tournament extends beyond lifting the trophy, insisting early success could shape the rest of their campaign.
“I think for us it is important to hit the ground running, to make sure we set the tone for the season,” he said.
“I mean you win this trophy it sets the tone for the season. So I think that’s a thinking for us, that’s a goal to try and go all the way in this tournament and make sure we set a nice foundation for us to carry us for the rest of the campaign.”
Standing in Chiefs’ way are a Golden Arrows side beginning a new era under head coach Pitso Dladla, who arrives after guiding Durban City to a top-eight finish and Nedbank Cup success last season.
The encounter promises to provide an early indication of Chiefs’ progress under Da Cruz following an encouraging pre-season and an active transfer window.
For Amakhosi, the objective is clear.
A positive start against Arrows would not only move them within two victories of MTN8 glory but also provide the confidence they hope will fuel a stronger challenge in the Betway Premiership and CAF Confederation Cup throughout the season.
