BREAKING NEWS: Bangladesh shock Australia with historic maiden Test win Down Under

From Darwin to Dhaka, Bangladeshis will be celebrating on Sunday after Najmul Hossain Shanto’s team beat Australia by nine wickets in the first Test at Marrara Stadium.

It was a historic moment, for it was the first time Bangladesh had won on Australian soil. The magnitude of the achievement cannot be taken for granted, as it’s also the first time Bangladesh have toured Australia in 23 years.

Bangladesh have only previously beaten Australia in Test cricket back in 2017 when Shakib Al Hasan spun them to a twenty-run win on a surface built for the purpose in Dhaka.

There were no signs history was beckoning coming into the Test after the tourists had been bundled out for 54 and lost by an innings in their only warm-up game last week.

But the tourists showed their true tiger spirit when they bowled Australia out for 198 on a fresh pitch in the first innings, batted through 138 overs to post 426, and spent the back half of the match squeezing an Australian line-up that includes Steve Smith and Cameron Green until it had nothing left to give.

Young fast bowler Hasan Mahmud bowled with the hostility that used to be Australia’s signature on home soil in the first innings, claiming career-best figures of 6/26, while fellow youngster Tanzid Hasan held the batting unit together with a maiden century in just his second Test.

But it was allrounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz — spinner, No. 6 batter, and by the sound of it, the calmest man in the Northern Territory — who stitched the innings together with the bat and then unpicked Australia’s second innings with the ball.

Mehidy followed up his first-innings half-century with a second-innings 5/56 to bowl Australia out for 284 — leaving the tourists a target of 54 to make history.

Although Tanzid could not repeat his first-innings heroics, falling for a duck early on in the chase, there would be no further scares as Mominul Haque (30 not out) and Shadman Islam (25 not out) comfortably took Bangladesh home and into a state of delirium.

“It was excellent cricket from us. We’ve been here after a long time. Excellent performance from team, showed our character,” Mehidy said.

“We had the belief. Australia are a world-class team and have lots of good players. We knew if we beat them, it would be very good for our country. Had just one message, that we have to believe otherwise it’s not possible.”
