Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has backed the versatility of attacker Glody Lilepo to help the team up front after a poor run of scoring form recently.

Chiefs are third on the log with 47 points, five ahead of fourth-placed AmaZulu, as they look to secure a top-three finish this season and qualify for continental football.

The gap between them and Usuthu could have been extended to eight points on Wednesday night, but they fell short, losing 2-0 to Siwelele at Toyota Stadium, courtesy of goals from Tebogo Potsane and Siphesihle Jeza.

That defeart ended their seven-game unbeaten run and extended concerns over their attacking output, having scored just once in their last three matches – the 1-1 draw with Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby.

To compound matters, they have also left out the team’s top scorer, Flavio Silva – who has nine goals and one assist in 28 games – in the last two matches against Pirates and Siwelele, opting to start with Glody Lilepo as the No. 9.

Given his knack for scoring and ability to influence play across different positions, Kaze has thrown his support behind the DR Congo attacker.

“Lilepo is a versatile player. He can play as a No. 9 and as a winger, depending on the game plan and the opponent,” Kaze said. “It’s good to have a variety of players as well; it gives you more options.”

Chiefs will hope to bounce back to winning ways and rediscover their scoring touch when they visit Mamelodi Sundowns in a league clash at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night (7.30pm kick-off).
