It is very clear that there is no longer a so-called “ROC president”, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Wednesday in response to Taiwan authorities’ postponement of Lai Ching-te’s visit to Eswatini.
It was reported that Lai, leader of the Taiwan authorities, has cancelled his trip to Eswatini. The Taiwan authorities said relevant countries abruptly revoked overflight clearance under pressure from mainland China.
The spokesperson, in a statement released on the Foreign Ministry’s website, pointed out that all African countries, with the sole exception of Eswatini, have established diplomatic ties with China.
“These 53 countries, together with the African Union, have adopted the Beijing Declaration at the 2024 FOCAC Summit. They have reiterated on many occasions that they firmly uphold the one-China principle, that there is but one China in the world, that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, that the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that they firmly support all efforts by the Chinese government to achieve national reunification,” the statement read.
China highly commends relevant countries’ commitment to the one-China principle, which is fully consistent with international law and the basic norms governing international relations, the spokesperson stressed.
Noting that the one-China principle reflects the arc of history and public opinion trends, and that upholding it is the right thing to do, the spokesperson said no one can stop the eventual reunification of China.
The separatist attempts aimed at “Taiwan independence” are futile and doomed to fail, the spokesperson added.
Zhang Han, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, on Wednesday also responded to media queries on the issue, commending relevant countries for adhering to the one-China principle.
The facts once again demonstrate that the one-China principle is a fundamental norm governing international relations and a prevailing consensus of the international community, Zhang noted.
It reflects the overarching trend of the times and the will of the people, the spokesperson added.
