David Schwimmer slams Kanye West apology as sponsors pull out of Wireless Festival

David Schwimmer isn’t buying the hype around Kanye West – aka Ye – and his latest apology.

The “Friends” star has been vocal about the rapper’s history of antisemitic remarks, insisting that words alone can’t erase the harm done.

“An apology letter is just that: Words on paper,” Schwimmer said, referring to West’s “Wall Street Journal” apology.

“It does not erase years of abuse,” he added.

Schwimmer also pointed out the inconsistency in West’s apologies: “Remember: Ye’s apologised before, only to retract that apology and double down on his virulent hatred of Jewish people.”

The backlash isn’t just coming from celebrities. Sponsors are withdrawing from London’s 2026 Wireless Festival after booking Ye as a headliner, citing concerns over associating with his ongoing controversy.

Brands reportedly felt his apology didn’t reflect accountability, prompting the cancellations and raising questions about the festival’s lineup.

Schwimmer didn’t spare the rapper’s celebrity friends either.

“It’s fine for his famous pals to pat him on the back and say, ‘It’s all good,’ but the community he has harmed most has no reason to trust his apology is authentic,” Schwimmer said, emphasising the gap between public gestures and meaningful accountability.

Schwimmer praised the sponsors who withdrew and reiterated that forgiveness “takes much more than this,” noting that words alone, even full‑page adverts in respected publications, won’t cut it without concrete behaviour changes.

Several major sponsors, including Pepsi and Diageo, are withdrawing from the festival after West was announced as a headliner.

The decision follows backlash over his controversial antisemitic remarks, raising reputational concerns. Political and public pressure has amplified the withdrawals, leaving organisers scrambling to address the fallout.

Despite the spate of sponsor exits and political pressure, including calls from UK figures to block the rapper’s entry into the country, the festival organisers are sticking with their choice.

Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, doubled down on the booking, urging the public to consider forgiveness and second chances, even as he described some of West’s past comments as “abhorrent.”

Benn emphasised that the rapper will only perform his catalogue of hits, not use the stage to spread controversial opinions, and noted that fans continue to stream his music widely.

“Yes, the backlash is real,” Benn said in his defence, “but he has a legal right to perform here, and we intend to honour that.”

His call for compassion and reflection comes amid accusations that the decision is as much about ticket sales as it is about inclusivity.

What began as a standard headline announcement has morphed into a wider cultural conflict: when is it appropriate to separate the artist from their behaviour, and when do apologies require more than reparative PR to be taken seriously?

With festival sponsors gone, political figures weighing in, and fans taking sides, the festival’s  controversy shows no signs of cooling off any time soon.
