South African DJ and award-winning producer DJ Chymamusique is feeling the love from fans after opening up about his ongoing recovery and taking bold steps to manage his medical expenses.
Collen Mmotla, better known as Chymamusique, recently shared that he underwent emergency brain surgery, a craniotomy, following a horrific collision in Polokwane on August 30 that claimed five lives, including that of his friend and fellow musician DJ Poizen.
The crash left him facing a long road to recovery, with his brain, speech and body still affected as he rests and heals.
Speaking to his followers on X earlier this month, he wrote: “I couldn’t share my journey for the past week due to emergency brain surgery called a craniotomy. My brain, speech and body are still disturbed, so I won’t be able to take calls or really talk in person for the next 2 to 3 weeks.
“See you on the other side.”
Hospital bills, especially after major surgery, can quickly pile up. To help cover the costs of ongoing medical treatment, Chymamusique launched his Bank A Buddy initiative and put several high-value belongings up for sale, including a Mercedes-Benz C63, motorbikes and DJ equipment.
The recovery has been intensive and costly. Chymamusique revealed he is on medication three times a day, taking nine tablets in total. “I hate them, and they are pricey,” he admitted, explaining that this was another reason he launched his GoFundMe-style campaign.
His social media posts shared the news with a touch of humour, showing the DJ’s determination to navigate his financial challenges while focusing on recovery.
The response from fans, friends, and family has been overwhelming. By 23 November 2025, Chymamusique revealed that the support had surpassed R100 000.
“They raised 50% now on Back A Buddy to gift me, they’ve passed R100 000. I’m blessed to have such generous friends, family & support,” he said.
Through the generosity of his community, Chymamusique is not only covering his medical costs but also finding strength in the encouragement of those around him.
What started as a tragic accident has turned into a testament to kindness and the power of people coming together to help one get back on their feet.
