In a surprising move, Amapiano pioneer DJ Maphorisa has announced his return to Afro music — the genre where his career began.

The producer and performer, also known as the Scorpion King, took to his Instagram Stories to share the news, writing: “Amapiano is in good hands. I’m going back to my roots, where it all started: AFRO!!!!!!”

The caption was posted with a short Instagram clip set to Afro music, which quickly sparked conversation across social media platforms.

Although he is best known for popularising Amapiano alongside the likes of Kabza De Small, Calvin Fallo and MDU aka TRP, DJ Maphorisa’s career predates the genre. He made his name in the Gqom scene and produced chart-topping hits such as “Midnight Starring” (with Busiswa, DJ Tira and Moonchild Sanelly), “Ngud” (with Kwesta and Cassper Nyovest), and the international hit “Particular” (with Major Lazer and Nasty C).

His musical adaptability has made him a sought-after producer across genres. But with Amapiano now “in good hands,” he says he is ready to revisit his Afro roots.

The shift has been met with widespread support from fans and fellow musicians. On Instagram, DJ Zinhle commented: “Let’s go.”

On X (formerly Twitter), the response was mixed but largely supportive. User Olfactory Scents wrote: “Yep, 3-step is popping now. He’s coming for all these small boys.” Another user, Sarabi, struck a more cautious tone: “Is it me or is he seeing a sinking ship? We’re having fewer bangers kwiPiano by the day.”

User @kgomotsokaalfootza predicted a strong return: “I know your comeback will have influence in re-popularising AfroHouse 🔥🔥🔥.”

Whether this signals a permanent move or an exploratory phase remains to be seen, but Maphorisa’s evolution is a reminder of his longstanding versatility in South Africa’s music scene.
