Drip or skip? Kaizer Chiefs fans deliver their verdict on the new jerseys

Kaizer Chiefs have lifted the lid on their new home and away kits for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season and, as expected, supporters wasted no time sharing their thoughts.

While some praised the retro-inspired designs, others questioned the latest offering from technical partner Kappa.

Built around the theme “The Kingdom Rises”, the new jerseys blend cultural inspiration with a lifestyle look that the club says is designed to be worn both at the stadium and away from match day.

According to Chiefs, the home jersey keeps the club’s famous gold colours while adding geometric patterns inspired by the Zulu culture. Black pin stripes and a black collar complete the design.

“The home jersey is designed to be worn not only at football matches but is also a must-have lifestyle essential in every supporter’s wardrobe,” the club said.

The away jersey takes a different approach with a black base, gold and grey zigzag details and a V-shaped pattern across the chest that resembles a lion’s mane. Chiefs say that the design pays tribute to the club’s memorable 1989, 1992 and 1993 seasons, giving supporters a dose of nostalgia.

For the first time, both jerseys will also be available in limited long-sleeve versions for colder match days. The home jersey will also come in a tailored women’s fit.

As soon as the kits were revealed, social media became a battleground between fans who loved the throwback feel and those hoping for something fresh.

X user @TheVeZzy did not hold back. “I hope this is the last season with Kappa, and please don’t renew their contract. They are not serious.”

Another supporter, @Vuyi_X, felt a few design tweaks could have made a big difference. “Jerseys would have been so clean without those weird shoulder patches. Also, the black one would have been nice if it had a gold trim instead of yellow.”

Not everyone agreed with the criticism.

Petrus Erasmus reminded supporters that the retro look was intentional. “To everyone saying the kit looks old and the pattern is being repeated, I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but that’s the aim because the theme is retro.”

For @ThabisoRapulen1, the jerseys represent something much bigger than fashion.

“People are commenting as if soccer jerseys are meant for them to wear when going on a date or something. This jersey is a reminder to the players that we have a legacy to protect. We are Kaizer Chiefs, a team with a long history. We need to look back and find ourselves. Beautiful.”

Others were still hoping for change.

“Can this be the last season with Kappa, please?” wrote @KagisoKhiba.

Meanwhile, @nomkhosi4 offered one of the most shared reactions of the day.

“Some jerseys are worn. This one is inherited.”

The club’s marketing director, Jessica Motaung, believes that the new collection captures the spirit of the coming season.

“As we have done over the past three seasons, we have worked hard to come up with glamorous and stylish designs that manifest the spirit of our mantra for the season, The Kingdom Rises. We want our players and supporters to stand out whether at the stadium or elsewhere.”

Kappa South Africa’s Ricky Joseph also backed the latest designs.

“I believe that this season’s Kaizer Chiefs designs are our best yet, perfectly combining trendiness, history and culture all in one.”

Whether supporters are ready to add the jerseys to their wardrobes or not, one thing is certain. Chiefs have once again given football fans something to debate long before the first whistle of the new season.
