MultiChoice, a Canal+ company, has announced major changes to its DStv streaming packages, with a new five-tier offering set to launch in South Africa later this month.
The announcement was made on Monday during a media briefing at MultiChoice City in Randburg, where Willington Ngwepe, Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice (Pty) Ltd, outlined the company’s plans and the thinking behind the new packages.
New DStv packages launching on September 17
The new subscriber packages will launch in the South African market on September 17, 2026, and will consist of five options: Starter, Select, Sports, Movies & Series, and Premium.
The announcement follows leaked details of the proposed packages previously reported by BusinessTech.
The new pricing structure is:
Starter – R99 per month
Select – R299 per month
Sports – R399 per month
Movies & Series – R500 per month
Premium – R799 per month

According to Ngwepe, the changes are part of an effort to respond to shifting customer needs and changing viewing habits.
“What we’re providing with this launch is something that is built around customer needs instead of overlapping packages that try to respond, or that try to be everything to everybody.”
He said the changes were also aimed at helping the company grow its subscriber base while retaining existing customers.
“At the heart of it is obviously for us to achieve our strategic objectives of making sure that we grow our subscriber base and we retain the subscribers that have stayed with us.”
DStv puts more focus on choice and value
Ngwepe said the new packages were designed to give customers greater choice and better value, with each tier aimed at specific viewing preferences.
However, he stressed that changing the packages was only one part of the company’s broader strategy.
“Packaging is just one element if we try to offer value to customers.”
He added that MultiChoice was also investing in new content and destination channels to strengthen the offering.
“The other critical issue is to make sure that you provide additional content and more exciting content with it. As such, we have created a number of new destination channels.”
A dedicated sports package
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of a dedicated sports package, giving customers the option of paying specifically for sports content rather than subscribing to a broader entertainment package.
The Sports package will feature more than 115 channels, including 17 dedicated sports channels.

Movies and Series package targets entertainment fans
For subscribers who are more interested in entertainment than sport, MultiChoice is introducing a dedicated Movies & Series package at R500 per month.
The package is aimed at customers who primarily want access to movies and television series without necessarily paying for the broader sports offering.
Premium remains the all-inclusive option
MultiChoice will also retain its Premium package at R799 per month, positioned as the company’s top-tier offering for customers who want access to the widest range of content.
Ngwepe said Premium subscribers would continue to have access to exclusive sports content, including Springbok and international rugby, as well as Formula 1, golf and tennis.
The revamped package structure marks a significant shift in how DStv is positioning its offerings, with customers now able to choose packages more closely aligned with the type of content they watch.
