Two local karate stars have returned from Europe with medals around their necks after producing outstanding performances at the 14th WUKF World Karate Championships in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Representing Lionmode Karate Academy under the guidance of director and head coach Sudhir Balli, the pair stood out among thousands of competitors from across the globe during the championships, held from 22 to 26 July.
Ndalenhle Mhlongo, 8, delivered one of the tournament’s most impressive performances, claiming a silver medal in the highly competitive Under-8 All Belts division. The young karateka battled through a field of 43 competitors to finish second in one of the largest categories at the world championships.
Fellow Lionmode athlete and instructor Sinqobile Nzuza, 27, also showcased exceptional skill and determination, securing a bronze medal in the Senior Under-65kg All Belts division against some of the world’s top competitors.

Balli, who also served as a national coach for Team South Africa during the event, described the achievements as a proud moment for both the academy and the country.
“It fills me with immense pride. While medals are always a wonderful achievement, what makes me even prouder is the level at which our athletes competed,” said Balli.
“These results are a testament to the dedication of the athletes, the unwavering support of their families, and the hard work of our coaching team. They also show that South African karate can compete with the very best on the international stage.”
Lionmode Karate Academy was represented by eight athletes at the prestigious tournament, all of whom earned the opportunity to compete on the world stage.

“What stood out most for me was seeing how a relatively small dojo from South Africa was able to make such a significant impact on the world stage,” Balli added.
“As the tournament progressed, we received numerous compliments from coaches, officials, and representatives from other countries about the standard of our athletes, their discipline, and the professionalism of our team.”
Looking ahead, Balli said Lionmode Karate Academy will continue developing future champions while expanding its outreach programme for children with disabilities and creating more opportunities for athletes to gain valuable international experience.
