In a moment of musical triumph, Ed Sheeran recently sat down with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe to celebrate his 2017 hit single “Shape of You”, which was named the platform’s most-streamed track of the last decade.

As part of Apple Music’s tenth-anniversary festivities, the streaming service revealed its top 500 most-streamed songs, with Sheeran‘s infectious pop anthem stealing the spotlight at number one.

Shape of You” has proven its longevity, reaching the No 1 position on Apple Music’s Top Pop Songs chart for an astonishing 1 800 days across various countries in the last ten years.

The track also dominated the platform’s all-genre songs chart for over 1,000 days, showcasing its universal appeal.

Upon its initial release, “Shape of You” shattered records, marking the biggest debut day for a pop song on Apple Music.

In the exclusive interview with Lowe, Sheeran reflected on the creative process behind the song, recalling a casual studio session that led to an unexpected masterpiece.

“I wrote it and didn’t even cross my mind that it would end up like this,” he said.

“At the time, I was just focused on the next track, looking back now, I wish I’d realised how special those moments were.”

Sheeran also acknowledged that “Shape of You” was not initially considered a defining track for him.

“I’ve been lucky to create many memorable songs, but I did not see this one as the ultimate hit,” he confessed.

Nonetheless, he has been astonished by its reach, explaining how it resonates in diverse cultures, from vibrant festivals to remote jungles in Cambodia: “No matter where I go, ‘Shape of You’ always finds its way,” he added.

Following Sheeran’s accolade was The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights,” which held the second spot in Apple Music’s top 500.

The track dominated charts globally, boasting over 180 days in the top ten.

Drake’s “God’s Plan” claiming the third position highlights the Canadian rapper’s hold on the music scene, as he had the most entries with a total of 27 songs in the top 500.

Meanwhile, Post Malone rounded off the top five with two of his tracks, solidifying his place in pop music history.

Travis Scott, Chris Brown and Billie Eilish also featured in the Top 10.

Female powerhouse Taylor Swift made her mark with 14 entries in the top 500, emphasising her ongoing influence in the industry.

Her track “Cruel Summer”, which came in at No 57, was her standout song for the decade on the platform.
