South African health experts say that Covid-19 testing has dropped drastically over the past few months as citizens assume the pandemic is over.
Speaking to SABC News, Director of the African Health Research Institute, Professor Willem Hanekom, says the country could experience a sixth wave of infections.
After the lifting of the Covid-19 restrictions in May this year, people have begun to drop their guard against the virus and are ignoring Covid-19 related symptoms, he explained.
“We think there may be a wave coming, but there is one big problem, that is we’re not really testing enough people anymore. Most people think we are over Covid when we are not over Covid,” he said.
Deputy Director General of Health, Dr Nicholas Crisp said booster vaccine shots are essential to keep the body’s immune system on track to fight the virus.
Cape Town’s mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has outlined plans aimed at increasing safety and police efficacy through technology.
