The mystery over the death of ex-minister and ambassador Nathi Mthethwa in France has finally been laid to rest after French authorities closed their investigation.
The Paris Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed the cause of death previously given by the Mthethwa family, justice minister Mmamoloko Kubayi said on Friday.
“Members of the public and the media must refrain from circulating unfounded information,” Kubayi said.
“We must respect the dignity of the late Ambassador Mthethwa, as well as the Mthethwa family’s right to closure and privacy.”
She said the matter was now closed, which allowed his estate to be administered and wound up.
Mthethwa, 58, died in Paris on September 30 last year.
The Paris Prosecutor’s Office said at the time he had booked a room on the 22nd floor of the Hyatt Regency hotel, and that his body had been found beside the building after the room’s secured window had been forced open.
The prosecutor’s office said his wife had reported him missing the night before.
This after he had sent her a message in which he said he intended to end his life.
Mthethwa had served as police minister and later as arts and culture minister before he was appointed ambassador to France in 2023.
