It’s not often that Gerda Steyn does not win a local road race over 10km in which she takes part, but that’s exactly what happened over the weekend at the Pirates 21km.

The gruelling, undulating route in the heart of Johannesburg has become a key part of Steyn’s preparation for Two Oceans Marathon, but this year she was unable to get the win.

Steyn had to settle for second place in 80 minutes and 14 seconds (80:24) behind Lesotho’s Neheng Khatala (79:33).

Still, Steyn’s time and position will matter little in her preparation for Two Oceans as she will be plotting her way for a seventh title in a row.

Steyn Reflects on Joburg’s Toughest 21km Race Experience

“Can’t win ‘em all. It was such a great morning at Joburg’s Toughest 21km race,” said Steyn on Facebook.

“I’ve been looking forward to running this course since last year, because despite the hills, it just sums up everything I love about running! Overcoming challenges, finding inner strength, community, support, power and fun!

“I was a little bit disappointed about not bettering my time from last year, but I am using it as fuel to the fire!! My training has gone so well until now, so I am thinking big picture stuff here!! Taking my silver medal as a reminder to keep working hard and staying focused in every aspect.”

The prizemoney for 2026 Two Oceans has been increased by R130,000 to R380,000 for first place in the respective men’s and women’s races in the 56km event.

Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin has long been treated as the permanent antagonist in Western political storytelling. From the moment he stepped into office, he was positioned as the figure through whom the liberal order could rehearse its claims to virtue in the language of democracy and human rights. That image repeated so often that it began to feel fixed and unquestionable. He became the man cast to carry darkness so that […]
