The 2025 Gary and Vivienne Player Invitational, scheduled for Sun City from 1-2 November, promises to be an extraordinary homage to one of South Africa’s most illustrious sporting figures.

This year’s event will not only mark the prestigious tournament’s legacy but also celebrate golf’s global ambassador, Gary Player, as he turns 90.

Hosted across the iconic Gary Player Country Club and the Lost City Golf Course, this tournament brings together an impressive roster of Sunshine Tour professionals, sports figures, celebrities, and business leaders. Together, they will raise funds for the Gary & Vivienne Player Foundation South Africa (GVPF SA), primarily benefiting the Blair Atholl Pre-Primary School, tucked away on the outskirts of Johannesburg.

The event underscores Player’s lifelong commitment to leveraging his fame for community impact and charitable endeavours.

In a heartfelt appeal for compassion, Player has initiated “90 Acts of Kindness”, encouraging individuals worldwide to engage in acts of goodwill, no matter how small, as part of his birthday celebrations.

“Everybody can be kind. No act is too small. Together, let’s make kindness our legacy,” Player remarked, emphasising the importance of collective kindness in improving the lives of countless children through his foundation and its numerous initiatives.

This initiative has already garnered a wave of support, with international sports stars and celebrities responding to Player’s call. In the lead-up to this year’s tournament and his milestone birthday, the golfing community has been inundated with well-wishes.

Among those celebrating Player’s incredible journey are professional golfers Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose. Garcia expressed his admiration, stating, “Happy 90th birthday, Gary. You look like a young stallion.” Rose added, “I can’t believe you’re turning 90. You’ve been defying odds your whole career, from South Africa to your incredible longevity and work ethic.”

Annika Sorenstam, a golf legend herself, underscored Player’s inspirational presence in the sport, wishing him a happy birthday and acknowledging his ongoing influence: “Gary, I think you’re an incredible inspiration to many.”

The upcoming Gary & Vivienne Player Invitational is set to showcase not just the charm of the course but also Player’s unwavering belief in the spirit of “Ubuntu”—a philosophy that embodies compassion, respect, and community.

With the backdrop of two of his most celebrated golf courses, the tournament is poised to be a historic celebration of Player’s legacy and dedication to uplifting others.
