It is often said that a week is a long time in rugby, but sometimes a day or two is an eternity.

On Thursday, Lions coach Ivan van Rooyen spoke happily about Haashim Pead’s future at Ellis Park, saying he was pleased the talented scrumhalf was staying with the Lions and would be given more game time as they sought to develop him into a Springbok.

It appeared the tug-of-war between the Lions and Stormers had been settled, with Pead remaining in Johannesburg.

But just two days later, News24 reported that the 21-year-old was packing his bags and heading back to his beloved Bo-Kaap, with a move to the Stormers apparently imminent.

Pead, a product of Bishops in Cape Town, joined the Lions at the start of 2025 after failing to secure a contract with the Stormers.

According to the report, he will link up with the Stormers when they return from their imminent European tour to begin their United Rugby Championship campaign.

If the move goes through, Pead could make his Stormers debut against the Sharks in Cape Town in the third round of the URC.

It would represent a remarkable 180-degree turnaround from Van Rooyen’s comments just 48 hours earlier.

Pead’s considerable potential was recognised last year by American sports marketing giants Roc Nation, who added him to a stable that includes Springbok captain Siya Kolisi.

He was one of the standout performers for the Junior Springboks at the 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy and was subsequently named Junior Springbok Player of the Year.

At the Lions, however, Pead has found himself behind Springbok Morné van den Berg and Nico Steyn in the scrumhalf pecking order.

The Stormers have Springbok Cobus Reinach as their No 1 scrumhalf, but there is an opening in their squad following the serious knee injury suffered by Imad Khan.

The Stormers begin their URC campaign away to Connacht before hosting Edinburgh on 2 October.

The Lions open their campaign at Ellis Park on 26 September when they host defending champions Leinster.
