The City of Cape Town’s Human Settlements Directorate has issued a warning, alerting residents to housing opportunity scam attempts on social media platforms.
Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim, said the City is “aware of a scam circulating on WhatsApp and other social media platforms.”
Fraudsters are falsely claiming that residents can secure City housing opportunities by making a payment.
He emphasised that the City will never ask for money to secure a housing opportunity, noting that this is important to keep in mind.
“We remind residents that the City does not charge for housing opportunities, and no official process requires payment at any stage,” Pophaim said.
Residents are urged to refrain from making any payments or sharing personal details with unfamiliar individuals on communication networks and social media platforms.
He stated that city housing opportunities are entirely free, emphasising that eligible residents will never be required to pay for placement on the City’s Housing Needs Register, the allocation of these opportunities, or any associated housing services.
- All legitimate communication about City housing opportunities will come directly from City officials, through our formal and verifiable channels and, if in doubt, always phone the City’s Human Settlements Call Centre on 021 444 0333.
- The City will never request payment for housing opportunities.
Beneficiaries must keep their housing registration up to date via official channels or the City’s housing offices.
