Limpopo rapper Katlego “Shebeshxt” Chauke has claimed Thobela FM’s Song of the Year 2025 for his hit track “Rato Laka”, featuring Zee Nxumalo, Naqua SA, and Slidoo Man. The award was announced just before midnight on New Year’s Eve, cementing the song’s popularity among listeners.
Announcing the accolade just before midnight on New Year’s Eve, the public broadcaster said, “We close off the year 2025 with you in love and joy. Thobela FM’s year-ending song is Rato Laka by Shebe, Zee Nxumalo & Naqua SA featuring Slidoo Man.”
The win sparked widespread celebration among fans, with social media user THEGENUINET posting: “Rato Laka is Song of the Year 2026, clock it. Congratulations to Shebeshxt, maburna.”
However, the recognition has also drawn criticism, reigniting debate around separating an artist’s work from their personal circumstances.
User EL_Thinga questioned the decision, commenting, “A man who is in custody for multiple counts of attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, assault GBH, malicious property damage and unlawful firearm possession wins song of the year? Strange.”

The win comes at a challenging time for the artist, who has been in custody since November 2025, missing several festive-season performances reportedly worth millions of rand. While the accolade celebrates his musical success, it also shines a spotlight on the ongoing legal challenges he currently faces.
Chauke faces a total of nine charges, including three counts of attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, all classified as Schedule 6 offences, the most severe under South African law.
These charges stem from an October 2025 road-rage incident in Ladanna, Polokwane, where Chauke allegedly discharged a firearm.
His recent bail applications have been denied, with the next court appearance scheduled for 18 February 2026. His detention has already had significant financial consequences, with multiple performances cancelled and promoters estimating losses of millions of rand.
Despite these challenges, “Rato Laka” continues to resonate with audiences, standing as Limpopo’s Song of the Year even as its lead artist navigates an uncertain legal road ahead.
