If there is one absolute certainty in world golf right now, it is the profound uncertainty surrounding LIV Golf.
While the league aims to rebrand as “LIV Golf 2.0” for the upcoming season with a scaled-back calendar and significantly reduced funding, this downsizing stems directly from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) severing its main financial backing.
Consequently, LIV Golf’s access to virtually unlimited capital vanished almost overnight when the entity filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
With top marquee stars such as Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm still owed massive unpaid sums—rumoured to be in the $100 million-plus range—it remains highly questionable whether they will participate in the reconstituted league if and when it relaunch.
Will LIV Golf South Africa 2027 Proceed Despite Funding Concerns?
This looming threat places a massive cloud over future tournaments, leaving local fans with one pressing question: will LIV Golf South Africa actually go ahead in 2027?
The inaugural South African event, held in March, proved to be an overwhelming success, drawing record-breaking crowds of over 100,000 spectators across the four days. Not even the iconic Nedbank Golf Challenge—long billed as Africa’s major—has commanded attendance of that scale, with its historic record standing at 76,000 fans in 2019.
The single silver lining for South Africa is an open letter released by LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil. In it, he explicitly named South Africa—alongside Australia and Asia—as a vital international market the league fully intends to preserve under the revamped LIV Golf 2.0 structure.
LIV Golf’s unique selling point has always been its distinct appeal to non-purists. Outside the ropes, ticket holders enjoyed access to post-round concerts featuring top-tier artists. On the course, the team-based structure—though currently vulnerable to the tour’s funding crunch—offered a dynamic, modernised departure from traditional stroke play.
While critics frequently questioned the tour’s competitive edge, the presence of global superstars undeniably guaranteed massive galleries. In South Africa, DeChambeau was a firm crowd favourite long before securing victory in a dramatic playoff over Rahm.
Whether DeChambeau ever gets the opportunity to defend his title on South African soil, however, remains to be seen.
