Police in Limpopo have recovered three suspected stolen motorbikes, live ammunition and an unlicensed firearm during a series of operations near the Mopani District, leading to the arrest of a 43-year-old foreign national.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday along the R81 near the Mopani District office after police intercepted a vehicle believed to be transporting stolen motorbikes. The operation followed intelligence received from a private security tracking company.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, members from several specialised units were mobilised, including the Mopani District Tracking Team, Giyani K9 Unit, Public Order Policing, the Motor Vehicle Theft Unit and private security partners.
“Police strategically intercepted the vehicle along the R81, where a search led to the discovery of three stripped motorbikes concealed in the loading area, as well as a live 9mm round of ammunition,” Mashaba said.
The suspect was arrested at the scene and is being held in police custody. He is expected to appear before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of suspected stolen property and unlawful possession of ammunition.

In a separate incident, Mashaba said members of the Tzaneen Crime Prevention Unit and the Mopani District Tracking Team recovered an unlicensed firearm loaded with ammunition in Burgersdorp village.
“Two African males abandoned the firearm and fled into the village after spotting police who were patrolling the area,” he said.
Acting Limpopo provincial commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers praised the operation, saying it highlighted the importance of integrated policing and partnerships in the fight against organised crime.
Investigations into both incidents are continuing.
