The Madlanga Judicial Commission of Inquiry has officially ended speculation regarding its chief evidence leader, Advocate Terry Motau SC, by confirming his departure and announcing his replacement on Tuesday.
The commission released a definitive statement regarding the leadership transition, making clear that the change will not distract from the task at hand: “The commission confirmed that Advocate Terry Motau has stepped down from his role as chief evidence leader and has left the commission on good terms.
“The commission is grateful for the services rendered by Advocate Motau. Advocate Matthew Chaskalson was appointed as Chief Evidence leader.”
The commission added that it “will not be discussing the matter any further as it can only serve to distract it from the task at hand”.
It reiterated that the commission’s priority is to ensure that it is focused on conducting an enquiry into and “make actionable recommendations” regarding the allegations that South African law enforcement agencies have been infiltrated and unduly influenced by criminal syndicates and drug cartels.
The Madlanga Commission is tasked with probing allegations of criminality, corruption, and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system. It has been sitting since September 17, 2025.
Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels previously emphasised the sensitivity of the matter, stating that the commission is “squarely focused on its job”.
Speculation had been swirling around Advocate Motau’s future following reports that he had requested to leave his position as chief evidence leader.
Before the official confirmation, the commission had previously declined to comment on the internal staffing matters, noting that there were ongoing discussions.
