The eThekwini Municipality says work on the Southern Aqueduct should improve water supply from Reservoir Hills to Umlazi in Durban, while residents in Umlazi’s V section report being without water for almost six weeks.
The Project Executive for special projects within the eThekwini water and sanitation unit, Sduduzo Mtshali, said the water project in Reservoir Hills should be completed within the next two to four months. He said the city was working hard to ensure residents enjoy a great festive season without water interruptions.
Speaking at the Southern Aqueduct Bulk Water Infrastructure Project on Thursday, Mtshali said the delay in smooth water supply was caused by subcontractors not being paid on time.
The city has invested a total of R1.2 to R1.3 billion so far in installing new water pipes and executing the project itself, which has created 70 to 100 new employment opportunities.
The pipelines supplying the water run from Reservoir Hills and terminate at Umlazi in the south, covering a length of 24km.
According to the municipality, the pre-stressed concrete pipes have weakened because they have exceeded their expected life cycle, which has led to the structural failures.
The project is divided into six work packages, which resumed in April 2024 with the hope to be completed soon.
EThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba walks down a path during a service delivery intervention in uMlazi.
Meanwhile in Umlazi, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba conducted a site visit on Wednesday, following a complaint that the residents were left without water for weeks.
Residents said they have been forced to find alternative means of getting water, by travelling to other sections of Umlazi and buying water, for almost six weeks.
Xaba said the city would investigate the matter and provide a proper solution to meet water demand in all affected areas.
