A 40-year-old man is expected to appear in the Seshego Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Monday for the murder of his mother.

Police members attached to the Mashashane police station outside Polokwane in the Capricorn District were met with a gruesome scene when they discovered the body of an 87-year-old woman in Sebora Village.

The provincial police spokesperson, Captain Marius McCarthy, said the murder scene was discovered at about 3pm.

“It is alleged that police on the afternoon of Saturday, June 28, 2025, responded to the complaint of a missing person from a neighbour who was worried that the 87-year-old was not seen for over two days,” McCarthy said.

“The police immediately went to the home of the 87-year-old woman. Upon investigation, they were met by a very disturbing scene, where they discovered the woman’s dismembered body parts placed inside the plastic buckets,” he said.

Police said several items that were allegedly used during the commission of the crime were also found at the scene.

“The suspect (son) was arrested immediately after he could not give a satisfactory explanation of the gruesome act. The motive behind this senseless murder is currently being investigated by the police,” McCarthy said.

The Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, strongly condemned the heinous crime.

She pointed out that the suspect was expected to protect his mother instead of prematurely cutting her life short.

“The scourge of gender-based violence has reached crisis point. This pandemic needs all sectors of society to join hands with the police and confront this demon that continues to terrorise communities. Enough is enough,” Hadebe said.
