Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx became the latest double World Cup winner to win rugby’s coveted Player of the Year accolade.

The Bok hooker, who produced a powerhouse display against Ireland in Dublin on Saturday in a 24-13 victory, achieved the feat for the first time after being nominated in 2018. He beat fellow World Cup winners Pieter-Steph du Toit and Ox Nché, and Frenchman Louis Bielle-Biarrey to the prize.

The 31-year-old, who has been a key figure for the Springboks in the lineouts, scrums, at the breakdowns, and in general play this season, capped off a stellar season with the title and becomes the first front rower to claim it since 2001.

“On behalf of SA Rugby, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Malcolm,” said Mark Alexander, president of SA Rugby, in a statement.

“His work ethic is simply unbelievable, and he embodies everything we value in a Springbok – resilience, commitment and character. This award is a fitting recognition of his contribution to our team and to the sport of rugby.”

Alexander also applauded fellow nominees Du Toit, Nché, and rookie Ethan Hooker — with the latter shortlisted for the World Rugby Men’s Breakthrough Player of the Year award — saying their achievements highlight the strength and depth of South African rugby under coach Rassie Erasmus.

“Having three of the four nominees for the World Rugby Men’s 15s Player of the Year, along with a Breakthrough Player nominee, speaks volumes about the quality within this team. We are incredibly proud of every one of them,” Alexander said.

The Springboks completed a fourth victory on their year-end tour, defeating Ireland by 11 points on Saturday evening. It capped off another brilliant display by Marx and his teammates to remain undefeated as they kept hold of their number 1 ranking in the world with one more Test to go.
