Mary J. Blige has no regrets about passing on the song “Umbrella,” which became a massive hit for Rihanna.

The American singer-songwriter explained her decision in the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, stating that the track simply wasn’t her style. Blige found the lyrics incompatible with her artistic identity, specifically mentioning a line that gave her pause.

“All I heard was ‘eh, eh,’ and I was like, ‘Yo, my fans are gonna bug out on me if they hear me talking about eh, eh, eh,’” she said, clarifying why she realised the song wasn’t a fit for her.

The song’s journey has sparked debate among fans; while some feel Mary J. Blige missed an opportunity, others believe Rihanna’s eventual recording proved the song found its rightful owner.

Mary J. Blige revealed she was offered “Umbrella” when her own hit “Without You” was popular. However, Blige chose to pass on it, sensing it wasn’t meant for her, and when she heard Rihanna sing it, she felt she was the perfect fit. As she put it, “I’m not afraid to pass on something that is not meant for me, it got away, it got away.”

Umbrella,” released in 2007, became a defining moment in Rihanna’s career, achieving global chart dominance, including seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite its eventual massive success, the song faced a difficult path, being passed over by numerous artists and rejected by several record labels before finally reaching Rihanna.

While she had hits before and has made other songs since, “Umbrella” profoundly elevated her status in a way her other songs have not, setting historical records on the charts.
