Milk + Cookies Festival is returning to South Africa in 2027, bringing its mix of music, food, fashion, art and design to Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The festival will take place in Cape Town on January 29 and Johannesburg on January 31.

The announcement comes after two previous South African editions attracted more than 50,000 people combined.

The festival made its South African debut in 2025, with Haitian-Canadian producer Kaytranada headlining an event attended by 20,000 people.

The following year, Atlanta rapper Gunna headlined, with more than 30,000 people attending across the Cape Town and Johannesburg events.

That edition also featured two weeks of Milk + Cookies Music Week programming and more than 50 local and international artists.

According to organisers, the 2026 edition supported more than 3,500 jobs, including roles for production crews, vendors, venue staff and hospitality workers.

Never the same sound

While the festival has featured vastly different headline acts, organisers say that is part of the concept.

The festival does not follow a single genre, instead booking artists based on the audience and atmosphere they want to create.

This approach has been summed up in the campaign line: “Never the same sound, always the same feeling.”

The phrase has recently appeared on mysterious posters across parts of Cape Town and Johannesburg, including Braamfontein, Melville, Maboneng, Woodstock and the Cape Town CBD, without revealing the festival name or dates.

“That’s the only brief we’ve ever had. We book for the people in the room, not for a genre, and they come for what the room feels like as much as the name on the poster,” said Chase Freeman, Head of Marketing at Milk + Cookies.

More than music

The festival will once again extend beyond its main stages, with music, food, fashion, art and design forming part of a wider programme.

Panels, workshops, pop-ups and parties will run alongside the festival, with South African artists, creators, venues and partners involved in the programme.

Milk + Cookies co-founder Kevin Reese said the festival’s relationship with South Africa had influenced how it operates internationally.

“We came here to put on a show, and what we found changed how we do this everywhere else,” he said.

South African artists will be announced first, followed by the festival’s international headliner.

The full Music Week programme is expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
