The Ministry of Police, led by Firoz Cachalia, Deputy Ministers Dr Polly Boshielo and Cassel Mathale, and Acting SAPS National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, expressed their condolences after the deaths of SANDF members during an illegal mining operation under Operation Prosper in Gauteng on Friday.
Preliminary reports indicate that SANDF members were pursuing suspected illegal miners in an underground tunnel when they fell into an abandoned mine shaft. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation.
The Ministry of Police has extended its heartfelt sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased members, describing them as brave public servants who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.
“The loss of these courageous soldiers is a devastating blow to the security cluster and the nation at large. We honour their commitment, dedication and selfless service in the fight against illegal mining and organised crime,” said Minister Cachalia.
Lieutenant General Dimpane honoured the SANDF personnel for their unwavering partnership with SAPS in fighting illegal mining operations across the country.
“SANDF members have been invaluable partners in Operation Prosper and other crime-fighting initiatives. Their bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten,” said Dimpane.
She affirmed that they remain dedicated to ensuring the continuation of the work to which they devoted their lives.
“The sacrifices made by our members and soldiers will not be in vain. We remain steadfast in our efforts to eradicate illegal mining and protect South Africa’s economic interests from criminal syndicates,” said Minister Cachalia
The Ministry of Police reaffirmed the government’s determination to escalate the crackdown on illegal mining and ensure that those exploiting the nation’s mineral wealth face justice.
