SAFTA winning actress Mmarona Motshegoa, returns to television screens this week with another standout role in “Critical But Stable”, adapted from Angela Makholwa’s acclaimed novel.
Motshegoa stars as Noma, the devoted wife of Duke, played by Fortune Thobejane. Noma is a warm, compassionate woman with an unwavering moral compass.
She instinctively understands that while doing the right thing may come at a high cost, choosing the wrong path for what seems like the right reason ultimately leads to destruction.
Motshegoa connected with Noma from the beginning. She enjoyed working with her on-screen husband Fortune Thobejane, who she describes as genuine, funny, and incredibly down to earth.
“There wasn’t a single day on set that he didn’t make me laugh. He’s also very humble.
“We became good friends, and he was able to confide in me about many things, which helped me understand him better as both a person and an actor.”
“Critical But Stable” explores the challenges of manhood and it also delves into the complexities of marriage.
Motshegoa opened up about what the show has taught her about partnership in marriage and friendship?
“Marriage is tested over time, and every day it’s a choice to stay committed,” she shared.
“Fall in love with a person’s soul – not their looks or possessions. If life takes those things away, it’s their soul that will keep you in love with them.”
The actress added that friendship is essential in marriage and relationships that are built on honesty, strong morals and faith are the ones that withstand the test of time.
“The Word of God says, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.” That also applies to marriage. Seek someone who seeks God’s Kingdom first, and everything else will follow.”
Many women watching this series will see themselves in Noma. The one lesson Motshegoa hopes women – married or unmarried – take away from the character’s journey is that loving yourself is not selfish.
“It’s important to know your worth, to be treated like a queen by your husband or partner, and to reciprocate that love.
“I also hope they recognise the importance of honouring your immediate family before outside parties and choosing your life partner wisely because their decisions and actions will ultimately affect you too.
“Love requires compromise, but compromise should never feel like self-betrayal. Above all, trust God in every circumstance and remember that whatever season you’re in -good or bad, it will pass.”
Motshegoa encourages viewers to watch “Critical But Stable” as it’s a beautiful and relatable story unlike anything they have seen before.
“The series will make you laugh, keep you on the edge of your seat, and spark important conversations. Every viewer will recognise themselves in at least one character and probably see someone they know reflected in another.
“It tackles real-life personalities and the kinds of issues families experience behind closed doors but are often afraid to discuss openly.”
