South Africa’s 1-1 draw with Nigeria in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier has not only kept Bafana Bafana top of their group but also produced a viral moment off the pitch.
After the game, Nigerian fans took to social media to single out 19-year-old defender Mbekezeli “TLB” Mbokazi for his standout performance, with one passionate supporter urging Manchester United to sign him.
A Nigerian football fan has gone viral on TikTok after passionately calling on the English giants to snap up the teenager, praising Mbokazi’s defensive heroics against Nigeria.
In the now-trending video, TikTok user Fabian heaps praise on the youngster, describing him as a rock at the back who kept Nigeria’s top stars quiet. “And Nigeria players were not bad. South Africa had a good defense. They had good defense. Look at this boy, this 19-year-old boy. Mbokazi, look at that boy. Shut down, Lookman, Africa’s best player, shut down Simon. Nigeria attackers, shut down,” said Fabian
The fan went on to urge Manchester United to scout and sign the teenager, insisting he has the qualities to succeed at the highest level. “Manchester United, please go and sign this boy. Go and sign this boy. I know a lot of South African players love to play in South Africa. But if you are good, you are good. Because he shut down the attack. No place to go. Man U, please go and sign this boy. He is good, 19 years old. Shut down Africa’s best players. Even in Europe, they cannot shut down Lookman. Man U, please go and look at this boy. Go and scout this boy. Mbokazi.” said Fabian
Despite the 1-1 scoreline it was Mbokazi who stood out. The 19-year-old Orlando Pirates defender was immense at the back, marshalling South Africa’s defence against Nigeria’s dangerous attackers. His composure, strength, and tactical awareness earned him the Man of the Match award.
His performance against the Super Eagles has only fuelled calls for bigger clubs to take notice of the teenager. The tiktok clip has sparked lively debate online, with fans applauding the recognition of South Africa’s rising stars and joking that Manchester United’s scouting department should “check TikTok” for their next transfer target.
Mbokazi’s rise highlights the growing influence of African defenders on the international stage. Whether United will act on the viral plea remains to be seen but the teenager has certainly made a name for himself beyond South Africa.
