Nine learners to appear in court after alleged assault on school security guard in Limpopo

Nine learners aged between 15 and 19 are expected to appear in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of common assault and crimen injuria following an alleged attack on a school security officer at a high school in Mountain View, Boyne, outside Moria.

According to Limpopo police, the incident occurred on August 3, at about 8.30am while a 45-year-old security officer was carrying out access control duties at the school’s main gate.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said a group of learners allegedly demanded entry onto the school premises but were informed that they could only enter the school if accompanied by their parents.

“The security officer reportedly informed the learners that, in accordance with instructions from the School Governing Body (SGB), they would only be allowed to enter the school if accompanied by their parents,” Ledwaba said.

The situation allegedly escalated when the learners became aggressive and forced their way onto the premises.

“It is alleged that the learners became aggressive, overpowered the security officer, forcibly opened the school gate and unlawfully entered the school premises,” Ledwaba said.

During the confrontation, the learners allegedly directed insulting and degrading remarks at the security officer before physically assaulting him.

“During the confrontation, the learners allegedly insulted the complainant using offensive and degrading language. They also allegedly pushed him, causing him to fall and sustain an injury to his right hand,”Ledwaba said.

Police arrested all nine suspects following the incident. They were later released on warning and are expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on 7 August.

“Police investigations are continuing, and additional charges may be added as the investigation progresses,” Ledwaba said.
