South Africa’s first-ever PFL Africa champion, Nkosi Ndebele (12-3), is officially set to graduate to the global stage of the Professional Fighters League next month.
The 2025 PFL Africa Tournament champion will face American Mando Gutierrez (11-5) in a bantamweight clash at PFL D.C. on July 25, 2026, marking Ndebele’s official introduction to the promotion’s elite global roster.
The event takes place at CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C., and will be headlined by undefeated 2025 PFL Welterweight Tournament champion Thad Jean (11-0), who takes on 2024 tournament winner Shamil Musaev (20-1-1) for the vacant PFL Welterweight World Championship.
Ndebele has enjoyed a remarkable rise since joining PFL Africa. Before signing with the promotion, he made history in BRAVE Combat Federation by becoming the first South African to capture BRAVE CF bantamweight gold in 2023.
After arriving in PFL Africa, Ndebele compiled a four-fight winning streak that included his tournament championship victory and a lucrative $100,000 cash prize.
Earlier this year, the Diepsloot-born fighter appeared destined for a global debut in Madrid against 2025 PFL Europe champion Barus “The Sniper” Adiguzel (10-1). However, the bout was scrapped after Adiguzel opted not to compete while observing Ramadan.

Ndebele was subsequently matched against Italy’s Michele Clemente (7-2) at the SunBet Arena in Time Square, Pretoria for PFL Africa: Season 2. The contest served as a fitting homecoming, allowing him to compete on South African soil for the first time in eight years.
Throughout his rise, Ndebele has been vocal about his belief that he belongs among the sport’s elite.
“I want to go global — that’s where I belong. If Africans want to see me back in PFL Africa, tell PFL Africa to pay me what I’m worth, and then you’ll see me again. Otherwise, you won’t see me here anymore,” he said with a confident chuckle before facing Clemente.
Ndebele went on to earn a unanimous decision victory over the gritty Italian, who in turn won the respect of the South African crowd with his determined performance.
Now, the South African has the opportunity to showcase his skills on one of the biggest platforms in global MMA when he meets the experienced Gutierrez, a veteran of the PFL World Tournament, UFC’s The Ultimate Fighter and Dana White’s Contender Series.
Gutierrez has remained active throughout 2025, competing three times. However, he enters the contest looking to return to winning ways, with his last victory coming against Italy’s Francesco Nuzzi (11-2) at PFL World Tournament: Round Two in Orlando, Florida, in April 2025.
A new era for the PFL
The Professional Fighters League has undergone a significant strategic transformation over the past two years and is no longer operating under the league structure that originally distinguished it from the UFC.
The biggest changes arrived in 2026, with PFL global events moving away from tournament-driven cards in favour of traditional MMA matchmaking centred around championship fights, contender bouts and marquee attractions.
PFL CEO John Martin has described the strategy as prioritising elite matchups rather than requiring all top fighters to compete within tournament brackets.
Under the new model, the promotion plans to deliver:
16 global events annually
Events in major markets including Dubai, Madrid, Pittsburgh and Chicago
Champions actively defending their titles
Rankings-based title contention
Year-round storytelling similar to the UFC model
“We’re continuing to make big changes to PFL,” Martin said.
“Many of you probably remember that we’re stepping away from the tournament format. So what does that mean? That means every card is going to be built around the best fights possible. The biggest fights, every card. The fights the fans are asking for and the fights that the fighters want.”
“Our regional leagues in Europe, MENA and Africa are going to continue to maintain tournament formats, building the next wave of stars who will move up to the global stage,” Martin continued.
“This is a new era at the PFL — the best fighting the best every time.”

PFL D.C. will air live in South Africa on SuperSport and ESPN via DStv.
The preliminary card is scheduled to begin at 1:00 a.m. SAST on Sunday, July 26, with the main card expected to get underway at 4:00 a.m. SAST.
Fans can also stream the event live through DStv Stream where available.
Tickets for the event are available through pre-sale at pfl.info/dc, with additional bouts expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
