The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is set to withdraw all charges against Crime Intelligence Head Dumisani Khumalo, Brigadier Dineo Mokwele and other co-accused sometime this week.
The case, which began with arrests in June 2025, centres on allegations of fraud and corruption surrounding Mokwele’s appointment as brigadier.
The accused have denied wrongdoing, while serious questions have since emerged over the investigation that led to their prosecution.
According to the SABC, NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed that prosecutors were seeking an earlier court date to end the matter.
He said the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) was engaging with defence lawyers to bring the proceedings forward.
“But if they are not able to do… then they will have to stick to the date of September 3, which was the date set anyway,” Kganyago said.
The planned withdrawal follows revelations at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry that the investigation was incomplete.
NPA head Andy Mothibi subsequently announced that the charges would be dropped.
The allegations against Khumalo included claims that he manipulated recruitment procedures, bypassed mandatory vetting and failed to secure required top-secret security clearances.
Prosecutors also accused him of mismanaging secret intelligence funds linked to the unit and appointments.
However, it emerged at the Madlanga Commission that this was all a plot to remove them from office.
