The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has officially appointed former France international and Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira as the new head coach of the national team on Tuesday, describing the appointment as a “strategic move” to match the country’s ongoing sporting ambitions.
Rebuilding from his roots
Born in Dakar, Senegal, Patrick Vieira moved to France at the age of eight.
He went on to captain Arsenal’s legendary “Invincibles” through their unbeaten 2003–04 Premier League campaign and earn 107 caps for France, winning both the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.
He takes charge following a bruising 2026 World Cup exit. After group stage defeats to France and Norway, Senegal only managed to reach the knockout rounds thanks to a 5–0 win against Iraq.
The breaking point arrived in the Round of 32 against Belgium when Senegal held a commanding two-goal lead in the 86th minute before Youri Tielemans orchestrated a devastating comeback, netting an equaliser and scoring the extra-time winner to secure a 3-2 victory for the Belgians.
The turmoil under Pape Thiaw
Former coach Pape Bouna Thiaw built his early reputation by guiding Senegal’s domestic-based squad to a historic African Nations Championship title in 2022 before taking over the senior team in 2024.
However, the collapse truly began at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in January. Thiaw led Senegal to the final against Morocco until chaos erupted when the referee awarded Morocco a stoppage-time penalty. Thiaw urged his players to leave the field in protest.
The Confederation of African Football responded fiercely, banning Thiaw for five games, fining him $100,000 (approximately R1.63 million), and forfeiting Senegal’s AFCON title.
This controversy cast a lingering shadow over the squad as they transitioned into their 2026 World Cup campaign. Less than two weeks after their World Cup elimination against Belgium, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) dismissed the 45-year-old manager as the fallout exposed deep rifts behind the scenes.
FSF president Abdoulaye Fall said that ‘toxicity’ had surrounded the team after Thiaw demanded a pay rise during the tournament.
