South Africa’s fast-bowling department has suffered yet another severe blow on the eve of their three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Australia, with promising seamer Kwena Maphaka ruled out of the entire series due to a right hamstring strain.
Maphaka sustained the injury during a training session in Durban while preparing for tomorrow’s opening clash. The young quick will undergo further medical assessments in the coming days to determine the full extent of the damage and establish a recovery timeline.
The injury is the latest setback in a rapidly compounding crisis for the Proteas’ frontline seam attack. South Africa are already without pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada due to injury, and experienced right-arm quick Lungi Ngidi was also ruled out of the series earlier this week.
Ngidi experienced discomfort during a 1st Class Series match between the Titans and Dolphins, with subsequent scans revealing a right hamstring injury that requires immediate rehabilitation. Ngidi’s fitness will be reassessed closer to the coming Test series against Australia.
To cover for the growing list of casualties, the national selectors have been forced to swiftly reshuffle their pace options. Boland paceman Lizaad Williams has been drafted into the squad as Maphaka’s direct replacement and will join the team today ahead of tomorrow’s encounter.
Williams joins Dolphins seamer Nqobani Mokoena, who was brought into the 16-player squad earlier to replace Ngidi after being withdrawn mid-match from a four-day fixture against the Western Province Cobras.
With Rabada, Ngidi, and now Maphaka all sidelined, the Proteas face an uphill task as they reconfigure their bowling strategy to match a formidable Australian batting lineup in tomorrow’s series opener.
