Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma lands SA20 lifeline with Pretoria Capitals

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma will make his return to Betway SA20 next season after being picked up by Pretoria Capitals at the season 5 auction in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Bavuma has missed the last two seasons after going unsold at the Season 4 auction.

The 36-year-old, who is set to lead the Proteas in the much-anticipated three-match Test series against Australia starting on Friday at Kingsmead, was the very last pick of the auction with the Capitals picking up Bavuma for his base price of R200 000.

Bavuma has previously played for three-times champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape after being signed as a Wildcard in Season 1 before being retained in Season 2.

The Proteas skipper will be hoping to be involved in the Season 5 opener when

Sunrisers Eastern Cape host the Pretoria Capitals at St George’s Park in Gqeberha in a repeat of last season’s final.

Pretoria Capitals coach Sourav Ganguly was confident his team could go one further next season after two runners-up finishes in four seasons.

“We were in the final last season, and we did not finish the job. This time, we have come back stronger. Phil Salt is back, and we have retained the players who delivered for us — Dewald Brevis, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi,” Ganguly said.

“Add the firepower of Andre Russell and Sherfane Rutherford, along with some very good domestic talent coming through, and the core is in a good place.”
