The Proteas are batting themselves into an unassailable position in the second and final Test, but have lost three wickets on the fourth morning at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

Resuming on 26 without loss, the visitors managed to add a further 81 runs in the first session to stretch their overall lead 395 with five sessions remaining in the series.

The Proteas are not looking for an early declaration though as the run-rate in the morning session has hovered at just over 2.5 runs to the over.

Openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram once again got starts – like they have done in three out of the four innings of the series – but only to get out once settled. The pair were settled after adding their second fifty-run opening stand of the Test before left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja intervened.

Jadeja (2/20) dismissed both openers after Rickelton (35) sliced a drive to Mohammed Siraj at cover, before Markram (29) was beaten with a beauty that spun past his outside edge.

Captain Temba Bavuma (3) followed shortly afterwards when the skipper edged Washington Sundar (1/38) down the leg-side, in a similar fashion to his dismissal in the first innings in Kolkata.

The Proteas had lost three quick wickets to stem their momentum, but they remain firmly in control of the Test at 107/3.
