South Africa’s men’s and women’s hockey teams have been handed a crucial lifeline ahead of next month’s FIH Hockey World Cup after Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie approved R3 million in emergency financial assistance.
The government intervention steps in to resolve an estimated R3m shortfall faced by the South African Hockey Association (SA Hockey), which had threatened to force players to self-fund their participation at the tournament in Belgium and the Netherlands, taking place from August 14-30. Both national sides qualified for the showcase as reigning African champions.
Announcing the intervention on Thursday, McKenzie made it clear that national representatives should never face a personal financial burden to compete on the world stage.
“Our hockey players have already done South Africa proud, arriving in Europe as reigning African champions in both the men’s and women’s competitions,” McKenzie said.
“It cannot be right that athletes who have earned that place on the world stage through years of sacrifice are then asked to fund their own participation. Representing your country is a national honour and a national responsibility. It should never be a personal financial burden.”
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture confirmed the funds will be released once a formal agreement is finalised, subject to SA Hockey meeting strict governance, financial management, and reporting criteria.
As part of the mandate, SA Hockey must submit a full report explaining the root causes of the shortfall, account for the emergency funds, and present a financial turnaround plan to ensure long-term sustainability. McKenzie emphasised that the bailout is a safeguard for World Cup participation and not an ongoing commitment to underwrite administrative shortfalls across national federations.
The financial boost arrives at a crucial point in both squads’ preparations. The SA women are currently contesting a four-Test series against Namibia in Cape Town — having posted 4-0 and 2-0 wins in their opening two games — before heading into a World Cup pool featuring England, China, and India.
Meanwhile, the SA men’s side head to Europe with momentum after wrapping up an unbeaten home series against Malaysia with a 3-0 aggregate victory, ahead of their World Cup opener against Spain on August 16.
