BREAKING NEWS: Joburg schoolboy Jason Rowles fetches a staggering R2.9m at SA20 S5 auction

Jason Rowles, the highly rated St David’s Marist Inanda and Lions all-rounder, has landed a staggering R2.9 million deal with the Joburg Super Kings at the Betway SA20 Season 5 auction in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The South Africa Under-19 vice-captain fetched the eye-catching amount after Season 3 winners MI Cape Town and Joburg Super Kings were involved in a bidding war for his services.

Rowles, 18, is currently playing for the SA Emerging XI in the on-going CSA T20 Challenge, where he struck an undefeated 45 off 31 balls (4×6) and claimed 1/19 in the last match against Western Province at Newlands.

The teenager fetched a higher bid than even former Proteas captain Faf du Plessis, who was bought back by JSK for R2.7million.

Rowles will join another T20 legend in West Indies allrounder Kieron Pollard, who was bought for R1.5million, in the Wanderers dressingroom.

The Super Kings have a new coach in Albie Morkel, who replaced former New Zealand Test captain Stephen Fleming after Season 4.

The Kiwi has since taken up a job as England’s Test coach.
