The Gauteng police have confirmed that the gun, allegedly used in the attempted murder case against Chatunga Bellarmine Mugabe, son of the late Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, remains unaccounted for.
Chatunga Mugabe allegedly shot a 23-year-old gardener on Thursday at a residence in the upmarket Hyde Park suburb, north of Johannesburg where Chatunga Mugabe resides.
The man is currently in critical condition in hospital.
Chatunga Mugabe is expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg on Monday in connection with an attempted murder charge.
The 28-year-old was arrested at his Hyde Park residence on Thursday . According to reports from IOL, the Mugabe family has opted to distance itself from various statements circulating in the media after the incident, emphasising that these communications do not represent their views or position.
In a statement released through their legal representatives, the family expressed concern about the information being shared, further fueling intrigue about the case.
“We note with concern various statements and communications circulating in the media purporting to represent the views and position of the family,” the statement reads.
According to media reports, authorities were alerted to the shooting at the Mugabe home in Johannesburg’s affluent suburb, leading to an immediate investigation initiated by the police. During a search of the premises, law enforcement officials reportedly discovered bullet cartridges, but the weapon used in the incident was not found.

Eyewitness accounts and reports indicate that another man, identified as his bodyguard, was also taken into custody for questioning in connection with the event.
Chatunga Mugabe is the youngest son of Robert Mugabe and his second wife, Grace Mugabe.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, officers responded promptly after receiving a call from private security personnel who flagged them down upon discovering the wounded gardener.
“When we arrived at the scene, we found the man injured,” Nevhuhulwi confirmed.
IOL reports that the victim was rapidly transported to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition as medical teams work to stabilise him.
It is reported that evidence was collected from the scene, including a cartridge, yet the firearm used in the attack has not yet been located. Following the incident, two men were taken into custody for questioning and are expected to face charges of attempted murder at the Alexandra Magistrates Court.
