Seputla Sebogodi: Memorial services announced for the beloved South African actor

Veteran South African actor Seputla Sebogodi will be remembered at two memorial services, allowing his supporters to pay their last respects.

Sebogodi, 63, died on the evening of Wednesday, July 15, following complications related to diabetes.

A memorial service will be held at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria on July 23, followed by another memorial service at the Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane on Friday.

The actor was well-known for his role as Kenneth Mashaba on “Generations”, ‘Suburban Bliss’, ‘Bophelo ke Semphego’, ‘Redemption’, and most recently ‘Scandal!’, as well as his acclaimed theatre work in productions including ‘Big Dada’, ‘Waiting for Godot’, ‘The Rivonia Trial’, ‘Once a Pirate’ and ‘Mooi Street Moves’, among many others.

Sebogodi’s funeral service will be held at the Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane on Saturday morning, as reports of a dispute over his final resting place continue to emerge.

The actor was born in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, and his family roots are in Ga-Mothapo, east of Polokwane.

According to reports, his family is at loggerheads with his widow, Machuene Rosina Semenya, whom he married in February 2026, over his final resting place.

Semenya wants him to be laid to rest at Silicon Cemetery in Polokwane, while his family members want him to be buried alongside his ancestors.

The dispute between the relatives and the actor’s wife has social media users weighing in, with many calling for a peaceful resolution.

In the statement announcing the death of the actor, the family had asked for privacy as they navigate the difficult time.
