JP Pietersen has put his attacking intentions on the table, naming a Sharks backline packed with Junior Springboks and recent graduates from the SA Under-20 system for Saturday’s United Rugby Championship opener against the Ospreys at Kings Park (4pm kickoff).
Of the seven starting backs, only 27-year-old Murray Koster at inside centre has not represented the Junior Springboks — an indication of the youthful firepower Pietersen is unleashing as he begins his first full season as Sharks head coach.
Jaden Hendrikse and Vusi Moyo form the halfback pairing, while Koster partners Jurenzo Julius in midfield. Liti Bester and former Stormers back Suleiman Hartzenberg start on the wings, with Luan Giliomee selected at fullback as the Durban side make the most of his services before his imminent move to the Bulls.
The fixture represents a landmark occasion for the Sharks, who open their URC campaign at home for the first time in the competition’s history.
There is further Junior Bok involvement on the replacements’ bench, with hooker Esethu Mnebelele set to make his Sharks debut following his move from Pretoria.
Former Springbok, Bulls, and Saracens scrumhalf Ivan van Zyl provides cover for Hendrikse, while Darrien Landsberg starts at lock alongside Corné Rahl after joining from the Lions. Tighthead prop Nemo Roelofse, recruited from Stade Français, is also in line for a debut off the bench.
Several senior players were unavailable for selection through injury, including Vincent Tshituka, Emile van Heerden, Stephan Lewies, Jordan Hendrikse, and Fez Mbatha.
However, the Sharks have benefited from an uninterrupted pre-season, allowing them three months to build technical cohesion and conditioning ahead of the new campaign.
For captain Nick Hatton, launching the season in Durban adds extra incentive.
“The start of the season is exciting and playing at home for a change is really cool,” Hatton said. “All the teams want to start well, whether that’s at home or away, but playing at home is super exciting. We have awesome fans, and we’ve missed them, so we’re looking forward to playing in front of our home supporters.”
Hatton emphasised that squad depth and consistency will be paramount as the team navigates both domestic and European commitments.
“The URC is a long tournament, so squad strength and depth are important. We’ve worked hard during the pre-season, and there is competition for places as we build a strong squad that can compete in this competition and in Europe.
“Starting well and then sticking to it is important. We want to be a consistent team that trains and performs to a high standard — the new Sharks standard we’re driving hard. We’re excited to implement that on the field now.”
