Shaya Thursdays brings new energy to South African grassroots boxing

Golden Gloves’ bid to rebuild South Africa’s boxing pipeline got off to a promising start on Thursday night, with the inaugural Shaya Thursdays development show drawing an estimated 800 fans to Emperors Palace.

The new Pro-Am series, run through the Golden Gloves Foundation, is designed to give young amateurs and developing professionals a regular platform to showcase their talent while helping identify the fighters who could become the stars of tomorrow.

With legendary South African boxing figure Jeff Ellis overseeing the matchmaking and event management, the concept is to create a genuine pathway from grassroots gyms to the professional ranks.

And the first instalment provided plenty of evidence that there is an appetite for it.

“It was amazing. It was such a great event,” said Golden Gloves Foundation head of events and programming, Alveena Pillay. “It was full of energy. It was exactly what we were hoping for — energy, excitement, the crowds, the vibes. It was fantastic.”

The six-fight programme featured amateur and professional action, giving aspiring fighters an opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a major boxing event while allowing professionals to remain active and build their records.

For the amateurs, Pillay believes the exposure could prove particularly valuable.

“They put in the work in their various little gyms wherever they may be placed,” she said. “To be in a ring with lighting and sound and on TV, with their supporters around them in a bigger crowd, is amazing for them.”

For professionals, the benefit is having another regular avenue to secure fights rather than waiting for a major card.

“If they make an impression, they can be matched on another card,” Pillay said, adding that fighters could attract the attention of other promoters and potential sponsors.

 

A knockout start

 

The opening night delivered some memorable performances.

Zimbabwean minimumweight Beaven Sibanda marked his return from a year-long injury lay-off by stopping Tshepo Mokhele in the first round, while heavyweight prospect Ethan Peters extended his perfect stoppage record to four fights with a first-round knockout of Siyanda Mthethwa.

Ronaldo Sibisi and Jo-Lee van Tonder also recorded stoppage victories, while Jules Ngombo won on points and Charles Marokane and Katlego Mokwana fought to a draw.

But for Golden Gloves, the results are ultimately secondary to what Shaya Thursdays can produce over the longer term. The Foundation wants to identify talent before it gets lost between the amateur and professional systems, developing fighters from grassroots gyms and giving them opportunities to grow.

The long-term dream is to produce fighters whose stories begin in small gyms and eventually lead to major professional honours.

“We’d love to get a few stories of, ‘I started here and I’m now fighting on a pro card or I’m working towards an SA title’,” Pillay said. “That’s what we want to achieve.”

There was also evidence that the programme could help strengthen the boxing community itself, with Pillay recalling how a Durban fighter who arrived with only one corner man was immediately assisted by another coach.

“The community around boxing is so rich and rewarding and people just want to support each other,” she said.

The response from spectators has also encouraged Golden Gloves to consider expanding the event. VIP tickets had sold out and general admission was close to capacity, with Pillay estimating about 800 people attended. For a first attempt, it was a significant response, suggesting Shaya Thursdays could become more than just another date on the boxing calendar.
