Six arrested after seven electricity transformers worth R1.5 million recovered in Tembisa

Seven electricity transformers worth approximately R1.5 million have been recovered in Tembisa following a joint operation by Gauteng law enforcement agencies, with six suspects arrested in connection with the alleged theft and unlawful possession of critical electricity infrastructure.

The operation involved the Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, the Gauteng Infrastructure Unit and TDP Security Services.

The six suspects are being processed at Ivory Park Police Station and face several charges, including contraventions of the Immigration Act, aiding and abetting illegal foreigners by providing accommodation, and the unlawful damaging, removal and destruction of electricity transmission, distribution and reticulation infrastructure.

They also face charges relating to the unlawful possession of electricity distribution equipment and infrastructure.

The recovery comes as authorities intensify efforts to clamp down on the theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure, which can disrupt power supplies and impose significant costs on communities and the state.

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety welcomed the arrests and recovery, describing the operation as an important step in protecting critical infrastructure.

“This shows an important step in protecting critical infrastructure and preventing further losses to communities and the electricity supply network,” the department said.

The department also commended the law enforcement officers involved for their continued efforts to disrupt criminal activities targeting essential infrastructure.

“This forms part of the provincial government’s efforts to safeguard public infrastructure and hold those involved in infrastructure-related crimes accountable,” it said.
