“KwaNjomane” is back on screens for a third instalment.

The hit reality series, led by family matriarch Smangele Mhlongo, continues to unpack the very unconventional ways of the Mhlongo family, from long-standing tensions to personal growth.

If there’s one way to sum up the new season, Smangele advises viewers to “buckle up” and brace themselves for the never-ending feuds of the KwaNjomane family because this is life unscripted!

Since its first season, the show has steadily built a loyal audience drawn to its raw and often emotional storytelling.

Viewers have gone from seeing the deteriorating relationship between Smangele and her son Sibonelo “Chicken” Mhlongo and her sister Hlengiwe MaMhlongo Ngubane.

In a recent interview, Smangele revealed how the journey of KwaNjomane has changed her life personally as well as for her family.

“It has certainly changed my life and that of my family in terms of growth and how I view things that we go through as a family unit since the show started,” she said.

Stepping into her role as the family’s anchor has not been easy. Smangele admits that being the decision-maker comes with pressure, especially when she has to balance being a mother, sister and leader all at once.

“To me, being a matriarch comes with its challenges. In all angles, I am affected by having to be the decision maker, sister, a mother, the steerer of the family and an all-rounder.”

This season, viewers will see a more personal side of her, including struggles she says many people will relate to, like her relationship with Dladla.

“What viewers may be shocked to see this season is that just like anyone, I also experience deep relationship issues that a viewer might relate to,” Smangele shared.

Being on the show has also pushed her to rethink how she approaches family, tradition and spirituality as a traditional healer. Smangele shared that her perspective has shifted significantly over time.

“It has changed dramatically. As a family, we have had to outline our issues and respect each other’s perspectives. My spirituality has evolved from indumba to an autonomous spiritual individual.

“Certain moments whilst shooting became the backbone to where I am now spiritually and with my family,” she said.

Speaking on the most challenging moment for her on the show and how she overcame it, Smangele shared that it was leaving it all behind.

“The most challenging moment was detaching from my family and ubungoma (being a sangoma), and I overcame it by choosing myself and trusting the process.”

As for what lies ahead, she shared that nothing is being held back and that viewers can expect authenticity, unique family feuds and her family trying to deal with their unresolved issues.

“KwaNjomane” season 3 airs on Mzansi Wethu, DStv channel 163, on Tuesdays at 7pm.
